Storage Vauxhall Health and Safety Policy
Storage Vauxhall is committed to maintaining a safe and healthy environment for all customers, visitors, contractors and employees. This Health and Safety Policy sets out our approach to preventing accidents, protecting health and managing risks associated with storage facilities and removal services.
Policy Statement and Objectives
Our objective is to operate storage and removal services in a manner that minimises risk of injury, ill health, property damage and disruption. We integrate health and safety into our daily operations, planning and decision-making, and we regularly review our performance to seek continual improvement.
Management is responsible for providing suitable resources, information, instruction and supervision so that activities are carried out safely. All workers and contractors are required to follow this policy and work in a way that protects themselves and others.
Responsibilities
Senior management has overall responsibility for health and safety within Storage Vauxhall, including approving this policy, setting objectives and ensuring that suitable systems are in place. Managers and supervisors are responsible for day-to-day implementation, risk assessments, safe systems of work and monitoring standards on site and during removal operations.
Employees must cooperate with health and safety arrangements, use equipment correctly, follow training and report hazards, near-misses and incidents immediately. Contractors and service providers working on our behalf are expected to comply with this policy and any additional site-specific rules issued to them.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
We undertake regular risk assessments for storage areas, loading bays, access routes, office areas and vehicles used for removals and deliveries. These assessments consider physical, chemical, ergonomic and environmental hazards and identify controls to reduce risks to an acceptable level.
Safe systems of work are documented where necessary, including procedures for manual handling, operation of lifting equipment, working at height, driving and reversing vehicles, and handling customer goods. Staff receive information and training on these procedures and are expected to follow them at all times.
Storage Facilities and Customer Access
We aim to provide storage facilities that are clean, secure and safe to access. Aisles and walkways are kept clear to prevent slips, trips and falls. Lighting is maintained at a suitable level in corridors, stairways, lifts and loading areas. Where appropriate, signage is used to indicate safe routes, emergency exits and any restricted areas.
Customers are expected to store items safely within their units, using stable stacking and avoiding overloading. Hazardous, illegal or unsafe items are not permitted. Staff may intervene if they observe storage practices that could present a risk to people or property.
Manual Handling and Lifting Operations
Manual handling and lifting operations are central to storage and removals work. We take steps to minimise the risk of injury by providing suitable equipment such as sack trucks, dollies and trolleys, and by organising tasks to reduce unnecessary lifting and carrying.
Employees receive training in correct lifting techniques, team lifting and the use of mechanical aids. Loads are assessed for weight, size and stability before handling. Where a load is too heavy or awkward, staff are instructed to seek assistance or use appropriate equipment rather than attempt unsafe lifting.
Vehicles, Transport and Removals
For removal services, we maintain vehicles in good mechanical condition and ensure they are suitable for the loads carried. Drivers must hold appropriate licences, follow road safety laws and adhere to journey planning that allows adequate time for safe loading, travel and unloading.
Loading and unloading operations are planned to prevent falls, crushing, collisions and damage to goods. Vehicle movement in and around storage sites is controlled through designated parking, restricted access to loading bays and clear communication between drivers and staff on the ground.
Workplace Conditions and Housekeeping
We maintain good housekeeping practices to prevent accidents. Floors are kept as dry as reasonably practicable, and any spills are cleaned promptly. Waste materials, packaging and redundant items are removed regularly to avoid build-up and obstruction.
Equipment and tools are stored safely when not in use. Any damaged or defective equipment is taken out of service immediately and reported for repair or replacement.
Fire Safety and Emergency Procedures
Storage Vauxhall implements fire safety measures appropriate to the nature of the premises and stored materials. This includes fire detection and alarm systems, clearly marked escape routes and provision of fire-fighting equipment suitable for the environment.
Emergency procedures cover fire, evacuation, accidents, spills and other foreseeable incidents. Staff are trained in these procedures, and drills are carried out periodically. Customers and visitors must follow staff instructions in an emergency and use the nearest safe exit as directed.
Health, Welfare and First Aid
We provide welfare facilities for employees, including access to toilets, washing facilities and drinking water. Work is organised to avoid excessive fatigue and to support general wellbeing.
First aid supplies are available on site, and designated staff receive basic first aid training. All accidents, incidents and near-misses must be reported so that records can be kept and appropriate corrective actions taken.
Training, Communication and Consultation
Training is provided to employees on induction and refreshed periodically, including topics such as manual handling, site rules, emergency procedures, vehicle safety and the correct use of equipment. Additional instruction is given whenever work practices or equipment change.
Health and safety information is communicated through briefings, notices and direct discussion with staff. Employees are encouraged to raise concerns, suggest improvements and participate in consultation on health and safety matters.
Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement
We monitor health and safety performance through inspections, audits, incident investigations and feedback from staff and customers. Where shortcomings are identified, corrective measures are implemented and communicated.
This Health and Safety Policy is reviewed regularly and updated when necessary to reflect changes in operations, guidance or best practice. Storage Vauxhall is committed to continuously improving safety standards across all storage and removal activities.
